Metro Piazza, Chalfont St Peter – Review

Having been founded by Giulio Rocca over 20 years ago, Metro Piazza has a long standing reputation for authentic Italian style with food to suit all tastes. With the first branch opening in Mill Hill it has since expanded into Northwood, Rickmansworth, Ruislip and now the family run business has brought its passion for classic Italian cuisine to the village of Chalfont St Peter.

The menu offers a range of starters, pastas and pizzas however the pizza is what makes Metro really stand out. As a diner that eats with my eyes first, I couldn’t help but notice the array of pizza flying from kitchen to table – despite a plethora of pasta on offer, these thin and 12 inch crispy delights are hard to resist.

Perhaps the most impressive element of their pizza is based on their dough which is made daily in each of the restaurants using an exclusive flour. Although they offer the classics such as Margherita and Pepperoni, there’s still a good choice for vegetarians with the Vegetariana, consisting of peppers, artichokes, mushrooms, courgettes, onions, chilli, tomato & mozzarella.

The Meal…

Bruschetta al formaggio
Chopped fresh tomato, basil, red onions, garlic, marinated in extra virgin olive oil. Served on toasted bread with cheese.

I started with a generous portion of crispy bruschetta. It wasn’t overly cheesy as would be my issue with something like cheesy garlic bread, which tends to fill me up before my meal. For something fresh and tangy but also with a bit of crunch, you can’t beat it. The mixture of fresh tomato, basil, red onions and garlic is simple but delicious.

Saltimbocca alla Romana
Veal escalopes topped with Parma Ham and sage, cooked in white wine sauce. Served with spinach & roast potatoes.

Veal is new to me and as I had nothing to compare it to, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Luckily the veal was gorgeous and tender, as a meat lover I wasn’t disappointed. The stand out part of the dish was without doubt the white wine sauce. It complimented the meat perfectly as well as the spinach and potatoes, my only problem was that there wasn’t enough of it for the price! However, it cannot be faulted in terms of flavour.

Il Nostro Tiramisú
Delicious mascarpone cream with traditional Italian biscuit, soaked in a coffee liqueur covered with chocolate powder.

Although many of the desserts aren’t made on the premises (there’s an array of tempting looking ice cream creations on display as well as a gelato bar at the front of the restaurant) I went for possibly the most quintessential Italian dessert. I’ll be the first to say that Tiramisu isn’t my dessert of choice but after this light and moreish offering I have definitely been converted. No doubt this will be my choice (if I have any room!) for future visits.

My experience of Metro Piazza is always warm and welcoming. The waiters are charming, full of smiles and very efficient as I had my drink and starter within 15 minutes. You really cannot fault the hospitality as quick and friendly service always sets the tone for an enjoyable evening. The interior is bright and contemporary, with black and white vintage looking photographs of Rome adorning the walls, which helps to bring an authentic feel. It can seem slightly bare on first glance however considering the smaller size of the restaurant it makes it seem far more spacious. You don’t feel squeezed in as with some places. Metro is certainly a hidden gem and a pleasant surprise in terms of quality and service.
